This week I wanted to talk to you about
something that’s been on my mind for a while and something that I have a
love/hate relationship with: Social Media.
After being cyber-bullied by people
at school when a video of me went viral…
I’ve realized that even though Social Media is so intangible, it can
have very real consequences. Anyone can post anything they want and within
seconds it’s out there for the whole world to see, forever.
That got me thinking… Social media
is essentially a way to express ourselves, right? But what happens when people
hide behind anonymity to attack you?
I can guarantee you that none of those
cyber bullies would ever say what they wrote about me to my face. What’s even
more bizarre is that people who don’t know me at all suddenly have such strong
negative opinions of me, which they aren’t afraid to share… I guess that’s why
they’re called online trolls and keyboard warriors. They hide behind their
online personas and put up a front. In other words, they’re fake. And haters never prosper… I
believe your online persona will catch up with you one day in real life.
Karma’s a bee-yotch, right girls?
I choose to live my online life
honestly. Writing mean comments is easy but does that define who I really am?
Nope. Let your online persona hold up a mirror to your true self… don’t hide
who you really are!
With that in mind, let’s talk about
selfies! This week, I’m going to give you some tips on how to take an honest
selfie - a Selfme! :) Let’s get
started:
1. Firstly, the most essential element
of a good photo is lighting, lighting, lighting! Since we’re keeping it honest,
try standing near a window for natural light during the afternoon, you’ll be
able to get different intensities depending on whether it’s sunny or cloudy.
Be careful NOT to stand with a
bright light behind you, as that will cause your face to be underexposed – the
classic noob selfie mistake!
2. Try incorporating a background that
reveals more about yourself! You could take it in a part of your bedroom, in
front of your locker at school or your favourite after school hang out!
3. A good rule of thumb is to take a
high-angled photo; this helps you focus on the eyes and eliminates the
possibility of seeing up the nose (oops! we’ve all done it before).
4. Now, slightly angle your face either
to the left or right to capture a glimpse of your side profile, giving your Selfme more depth as compared to a
frontal profile shot.
5. Finally, my last and most important
tip for taking a good photo is to smile! Yup, it’s that simple!!
Be sure to upload your Selfme on Instagram and tag me @FruFru.Shru with the hashtags #frufrushru #selfme and #honestselfie. Until
next time! Mwah!
