I’m so happy to be back on this blog, and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I missed all of you! I always thought my blog would only be about my personal thoughts on fashion, lifestyle and beauty. But I realise now that it’s also a great platform where I can talk about important issues as well.
And what better way to rejuvenate this blog than with an issue that’s often overlooked: the concept of accessibility and disability in our society today.
It’s important to understand that people with disabilities don’t want our pity but our acceptance. They are just like us. They go to school like us. They need water and air like us. They bleed like us. Yet they are invisible. The thing that needs to change is how accepting we can become as a society as they too deserve equal respect and opportunities just like the rest of us.
For starters, it’s important to ensure we construct wheelchair-friendly buildings and accessible transport for their safety and mobility. Having said that, our efforts would be futile if we are unable change the way we approach those with disabilities in the workplace and in social settings as well.
If we pity or ignore those with disabilities, we are, in a sense, belittling them and leaving them feeling invisible and alienated. What we should do is be inclusive and be aware of their needs (just like all our needs), and enable everyone in society to be equally respected and independent.
So let’s come together and make it happen! It’s up to each and everyone of us to spread awareness and social consciousness. When you see someone or something that needs fixing, be brave and speak up.
That’s it for this week girls, until next time! Mwah!
