Now that orientation has begun, the reality of actually starting university is finally kicking in! I can’t decide if I’m more excited or nervous but what I do know is that this is definitely going to be a big change for me.
The biggest difference between university and JC is the newfound sense of freedom and independence. I know it’s to do with more than the fact that I no longer have to wear a uniform. At university, you don’t have teachers telling you what to do, or scolding you if you don’t finish your homework. You’re expected to act like an adult and be responsible for your own education. It’s liberating and a little scary at the same time.
I’ll admit it’s not all a walk in the park. Just like in Tanglin JC a year ago, I’ve found myself once again in a new place with no friends. At least I have P and S around to make this transition easier but I also know it’ll be a while before I can create new connections with others.
Nevertheless, what’s life if you aren’t exploring, taking risks and experiencing new things, right? I’m realising that my time in university is also time for me to have a little fun, go to parties and just enjoy myself – while balancing this with my studies, of course!
Having said that, I wonder what it’s like for mature students to have to make this transition? They have so much more to juggle, especially with a mountain of responsibilities like family and full-time jobs on top of their academic workload. I don’t know if I could ever do that but I applaud them for challenging themselves all in the name of bettering themselves.
That’s it for this week girls! Let me know if any of you are also starting a new academic chapter in your lives and do share your thoughts. Until next time, mwah!
