The macarons were to die for |
Just like everyone else, I was taught growing up that too much sugar isn’t good for you - it makes you hyper and gives you awful cavities. Now that I’m older, I’ve learnt one more important thing: it’s also bad for your complexion!
Yesterday, we had a little party at home and I ended up eating a lot of sugar that resulted in pimples and oily skin the next morning. I couldn’t help it… the cakes and macarons were to die for! But this got me thinking, that over-indulging in sugar is easier than we realise. Nowadays, there is hidden sugar in almost everything: juices, sauces and most preserved foods as well.
So sometimes, even though we think we’re eating a clean diet, we’re actually consuming all sorts of harmful sugars and preservatives. Which is why I like to employ the 80/20 formula to ensure I maintain a healthy, and balanced diet. The trick is to eat freshly cooked meat and veggies and fresh fruits 80% of the week, and the other 20% is reserved for any sugary desserts or fizzy drinks I want to indulge in. And by eating sugar in moderation, there’s no need to feel guilty about enjoying yourself whilst doing it!
But the tricky part is identifying those hidden sugars! So I’ve compiled a list of questions to ask yourself to know whether to Skip It! or Get It!
1. Does the food have a long shelf life? If so, it probably contains sugars and preservatives – Skip It!
2. If your food has been sealed in tinfoil or plastic? If so, it’s probably not as fresh as you think it is – Skip It!
3. Baking your own homemade cookies instead of store-bought treats? – Get It!
4. Can you pronounce all the ingredients on the packaging? If not, it most likely contains hidden sugars and preservatives – Skip It!
5. Are you squeezing your own fresh fruit juices at home? Or better yet, eating fresh fruit? – Get It!
6. Check the nutrition labels. Sometimes, even “low-fat” foods have added sugar – Skip It!
I hope that with these tricks and my 80/20 formula, you girls can upgrade your daily diet and lead a healthier lifestyle. Remember, there’s no need to feel guilty about those sugary treats, as long as it’s in moderation!
That’s it for this week, until next time!
