I love you mum! (A photo of us from Deepavali last year) |
Hai
Girls,
I had a crazy experience
this week – I spent an entire day working as a cleaner and it was a lot worse
than I had anticipated!! Initially, I was just dusting, sweeping and mopping. I
even thought to myself “Oh, this isn’t so bad!” Little did I know what was
waiting for me in the office toilets? I’ll spare you girls the details but
let’s just say it wasn’t pretty!! I have a more respect than ever for cleaners after
my brief stint as one – they totally deserve a raise!
So I bet you’re thinking what
made me do this? I’ll be honest. I’ve been feeling a little bit of pressure
about earning my own money instead of simply getting an allowance. I also wanted to prove that I wasn’t afraid of
getting my hands dirty with a bit of hard work. That, and my brother bet me
that I couldn’t do it. So… challenge accepted!
Tough as it was, I’m
happy I saw it through. I also gained newfound respect for Lathika and her work
as a domestic helper. Of course, I’ve always thought she’s amazing, but now
that I know first-hand how tough her job is, it really opened my eyes.
I’ll admit I messed up
when I mentioned it to Lathika later. She’s part of our family and I would
never intentionally offend her. Truth is, I’m so amazed by her past. Her story
is testament that life can be absurdly unpredictable and you need to constantly
adapt to make the most of it.
I understand now more
than ever that no matter what job you do, there’s always pride in honest hard
work and I truly have a deeper appreciation for all types of jobs now.
And speaking of
appreciation, when was the last time you told your mum that you love her? As
Asians, we aren’t usually used to saying these three simple words to our
parents. Since Mother’s Day is coming up, take up the challenge to surprise
your mum by telling her “I love you” and be sure to video her reaction! I did!
Watch my video to see my mum’s look of surprise!!
So girls, take up the
#IloveYouMum video challenge too and post your videos on social media. Don’t
forget the hashtag!
Thinking about my mum and
my childhood really got me reminiscing about the time we spent in India. I went
through some of my old photos and I’d really like to share a couple of photos
of this spectacular country.
