My mind feels cluttered these days. I’ve got school to think about (finals are coming up!), S to spend time with, and of course my brother’s chemotherapy to worry about. It's hard to be everything at once, a student, a girlfriend, a sister. And with so many things happening at the same time, I can't keep track of what takes priority.
It kills me when I'm not there for them, the people I care about. Because I'm supposed to be there. But I've recently realised that just because we're not there in the flesh, doesn't mean we're not rooting for our friends and family in our own way. I don't see S or P as much these days, but I feel like the alone time has been good for me. Even if we don't see each other, I know they have my back, and I like that I have the space to sort out my own thoughts and emotions.
It’s also good for me to get some alone time after the hectic Deepavali preparations last week. I was so busy, and so stressed out about everything and about S, that I don’t think I was my best self then. Thankfully, our celebrations went well and I was so happy to see my brother enjoying himself.
Having had the time to think things over lately, I now see how important it is to take care of ourselves first. If we aren't in the right state of mind, how can we expect to take care of anyone else? We'll probably just end up projecting our own problems, and that's not going to help anyone in the long run. At the end of the day, you're going to be living with yourself most of all, so you should remember that you are important.
So to start you off, here are a couple of suggestions I have to help you declutter your mind:
1. Find a quiet, private place where you can meditate. Maybe it's your room, your neighborhood park, or your school's rooftop – just find some place where you can sit and tune everything out, leaving your mind peacefully silent.
2. Draw out your thoughts! Maybe it's difficult to get these thoughts out. You don't need to be a master artist like Da Vinci to scrawl out what's been weighing on your mind!
3. Take a walk some place green. A breath of fresh air can be incredibly calming! Maybe you've seen too much grey in this concrete jungle, and some natural scenery can do you some good!
Do you have your own tricks to empty your mind? I'd love to hear them, so do share in the comments below!
For those of you who celebrated Deepavali, I hope yours was as special and wonderful as mine was! Till the next time!
