Exams
are here again… and can you believe it, I’m almost done with my first year at
university! I can’t believe how quickly the time flew by, but when I look back
at how much has happened, I can assure you that every moment of the last year challenged
me both mentally and emotionally.
I can
still remember my conversation with my brother the night before my first day of
classes. He told me I’d look back and see a different person in a year. And with
so many challenges and hurdles thrown my way (studies, friends, family and my
(ex) boyfriend), I’m so proud to say I am definitely a different person! A stronger person.
I
have learnt that I can’t afford to simply avoid inconvenient or difficult
situations in life and that is an indication that I’m officially transitioning
into an adult. ‘Cause the reality is that both good and bad things will come
your way, and you simply can’t stop life – you just have to force yourself to
always keep moving forward.
In
that spirit, this week I’m sharing my favourite trick to help you push through
the gruelling exam revision period ahead – by using mnemonic devices!
Mnemonic
devices are a great way to compress information and complex concepts into
easily digestible sections you can access them in an instant. All you have to
do is take a word you know you’ll remember, and assign information to each
letter – let’s try to assign useful study tips to the word “study”, and you’ll see how it helps:
S: Sleeping!
Make sure you get enough sleep. A tired brain won’t be able to retain much
information. Also try skimming through your revision notes once more before
sleeping. This will allow your brain to process everything you’ve learnt that
day in your subconscious while you reboot!
T: Tabs! Highlight the areas you struggle with
most by using colourful and creative, hand-made tabs. This will encourage you
to revisit areas you’re less comfortable with throughout your revision period.
U: Ukulele! Another great trick is to
transform your revision notes into songs. This really helps me remember smaller
details – just like lyrics to a song.
D: Dessert! After I finish an entire
round of revision of each subject, I reward myself with some delicious dessert.
Personally, I like to walk to the nearest ice-cream shop, because getting some
fresh air after being cooped up studying is a great idea too.
Y: Why not? This last one isn’t
exactly a study tip, but more a reminder for me to keep letting myself know
that I can do this. It’ll seem
overwhelming at times, and even impossible… but if lots of people before me
have conquered exams, then why not
me?
That’s
it for this week girls, stay focused and keep pushing forward. I promise you
that soon you’ll look back and be amazed by how much you’ve grown.
Until
next time,
Xoxo
