This week, my big brother pulled off
something so ambitious; I can’t feel anything but pride right now. Yup, he ran
an entire marathon to raise money to build a new playroom for sick children at
Tanglin General Hospital.
It was incredibly overwhelming to
witness everyone in our community pull together and do their part for this
well-deserving cause. Watching them I realised that charity doesn’t necessarily
mean donating money, but it’s equally about making the choice to volunteer your
time and resources with an open heart.
Doing so not only feels amazing, but
can be a lot of fun too! Honestly, there were times where I forgot I was even
doing charity. Not only did this
fundraiser help me see the bigger picture in life, but more importantly it
helped me recognise the power every single person has to make a difference, if
we just choose to do so.
As human beings co-existing together, it’s
important that we treat each other with selflessness, love and respect, and
when we do so, in one way or another it will be returned to us.
So, what can we do to get involved and
contribute? What are you good at? What can you offer? What cause speaks to you?
In case you’re still not sure, I’ve put together a few tips to help you get
started:
1. Place an empty Charity Jar in your room. Drop your loose change, or money you find
in your pockets into it, and before you know it you’ll be ready to make your
very first donation.
2. We all have old phones, tablets or
laptops lying around our house that we no longer use but that are still
functional. So Instead of letting them go to waste, donate them to care homes,
children’s homes or migrant worker shelters.
3. Re-organise your closet this week and if
you haven’t worn any item of clothing for the past 6 months – that’s a sign
that you should donate it!
4. Got a loved one’s birthday coming up?
Instead of buying a present, make a donation in their name to a charity of
their choice instead (and if you ask me, this is the best present you can give
someone).
5. Finally, engage and talk to people in
your community. By initiating a dialogue about the different ways we can all
help out, you’ll enable those who are willing but unsure of how to do so.
So what’s stopping you? Take charge, start
doing your part today, and feel the love amplify right back into your life. I
promise it’s one of the most fulfilling and powerful feelings you’ll ever experience.
That’s all for this week, until next
time!
