When I heard about A’s
heart attack from P, I was shocked. It’s scary to know that something like that
could happen to someone so young and seemingly healthy. The first thought that
came to mind was: what would I have done
if I were in her situation?
In a small country like
ours, it’s no surprise that A was surrounded by many people when the incident
took place. A few of them stepped up to the plate and took action immediately, resulting
in saving his life. But the majority stood still, frozen in shock. That’s not
to say they didn’t want to help of course, it was merely the suddenness and
intensity of the situation that caught them off-guard. I’m sure I would have
reacted similarly in their situation. However, I can’t help but consider the
very realistic possibility of the tragic turn things could’ve taken if everyone in the room did nothing.
Our friends and family are
dearest to us, however it’s easy to forget that they aren’t the only ones who
comprise of what we consider our
community. So I couldn’t shake the thought that just like we look out for
our friends and family, we also have a social responsibility to look out for
one another too. Though AED boxes are conveniently set-up around the city, they’re
of little help if we as a community don’t educate ourselves on basic emergency
protocols – what to do, whom to call
etc.
Our social responsibility
to the community we identify ourselves with is a hat we wear twenty-four hours
a day, seven days a week. This is not to say we all must become doctors or
fire-fighters to do our part, but there are other steps we can take: becoming a
registered volunteer, taking a CPR course or even just being aware, and
noticing symptoms or signs. And as P witnessed this week, these seemingly
insignificant details could be the difference between life and death.
I have to say though, that incidents like these truly humble me.
They remind me to never take anything in my life for granted, especially my
health and well-being. And that’s why I hope you girls stay safe, and alert. And
let’s come together to make our community a healthy, and happy place to live.
That’s it for this week,
until next time!
