Today I write to you on the
happiest day of my life, because my brother’s operation was a success! I’m so infinitely
grateful for all the support we have received from our community, family and
friends over the last few weeks. Whenever one of us was worried, there was always
someone else around to put our minds at ease. So just like we shared the pain
with each other, today, we share the happiness. That being said, even though
medically the outcome of the operation was the best-case scenario we could’ve
hoped for, he’s still not completely in the clear yet. The assurance of his
full recovery will only come with time, so I’m a little nervous about
celebrating too much right now in case I jinx this positive streak.
Maybe this has something to
do with Ma and Pa still arguing with
each other. I’ve been wondering why, or rather how they could find reasons to
fight in light of this positive news. But before I even get to that, I think
it’s important to acknowledge how hard my brother’s diagnosis must have hit
them. One of the hardest things for any parent to go through, is to know their
child is hurt or seriously ill.
They didn’t have time to
process and understand what so quickly became our reality, they had to find a
way to cope immediately, whether that meant suffering silently, or picking
fights and blaming the other person, even when the circumstances weren’t anyone’s
fault. It’s dawning on me that in a strange way, maybe they needed each other as
a way to find a release within themselves. And now that things are looking up, they’ll
process this too and find their way back to each other, or at least I hope they
do.
It goes without saying that
this experience has changed everyone in my family permanently. When something
so drastic happens to someone close to you, you have no choice but to process
this “new normal” and try to move forward in as hopeful and positive a way as
possible. This is difficult to do when the problem in front of you seems so
huge and overwhelming. So if the “big picture” is too much to handle, sometimes
it helps to focus on the small things.
This week, I want to
challenge you to find something that always
makes you laugh – whether that’s a funny video, a favourite film, a cartoon
character or, if you’re like me, simply hanging out with goofy friends who make
you laugh. And I know I can always count on my friends to put a smile on my
face… especially, do I need to say it, annoying but hilarious E.
So what cracks you up? Let
me know in the comments below, and remember any day that passes without laughing
even once, is a day wasted.
That’s it for this week,
until next time!
XOXO
